Stop Motion Developers

Ray Harryhausen
Ray Harryhausen is known as one of the greatest stop motion animators in history, he was inspired by Willis O'Brien by watching the famous King Kong at a young age. He was a big fan of watching films which is one reason why he went on to create some groundbreaking film material. As soon as he got his own camera he began creating his own stop motion animation films by designing clay dinosaurs. He studied long and hard and looked into the world of photography whilst going to university and learning to be an art director. He also completed a course in editing and from then on came up with his own idea to create a film. He is a fine example of the policy if you want to become something, you have to work towards it, because he most certainly did. The film he wanted to create was about a strange creature from Jupiter However this work never appeared in the public eye. After the fail of his first film he went on to create a film called evolution, this film featured dinosaurs as one of its main aspects and although it was filmed in a garage it still looks well animated. George pal a stop motion pioneer recognised Rays work and hired him to create puppetoons, he also worked with another developer called Willis O'Brien. Ray worked on numerous films and a film called The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms apparently brought sci-fi to life. He then brought out another film called Earth vs Flying Saucers, this created an outline for many modern flying saucers used in today's films. This may have inspired Tim Burton. Ray Harryhausen also created a film called "Clash of the Titans" by creating the creatures using stop motion animation, this film has been recreated for modern times in 2010. This shows how important the developers of stop motion animation has inspired the modern world of film alongside the development of ideas. To prove and thank Harryhausen he has been awarded with many awards such as academy award for the film "Mighty Joe Young". Due to his succesful work Ray Harryhausen is considered to be one of the greatest stop motion animators and although he doesn't make films anymore he still goes to Aardman Animation Studios to speak about stop motion. One of the genres he commonly used was sci-fi alongside the format of film. He will continue to inspire Animators for years to come.

Wills H. O'Brien - 2 March 1886 to 8 November 1962 was a famous stop motion and special effects pioneer. Who has influenced many of the current well known stop motion creators. Also the legend Ray Harryhausen.  He is mostly famous for his work on the original King Kong using stop motion for the first time effectively, taking the audience by storm and really announcing stop motion onto the scene of film. Now days stop motion animation is very common so it has less of an impact on its audience. Stop Motion had never really be scene before and they completed it with such skill. In the original the model of King kong weighed around 10 pounds and had a height of 20 inches.  As a teenager Willis O'Brien had a passion for drawing cartoons, however later in life he turned his attention to sculpturing. He would create models in which he would add rubber onto to give them more characteristics as well as movement. He only really used the format of film, but also produced some exceptional sculptures. He has worked closely with many people producing some ground breaking films , such as Mighty Joe Young ( 1949 ) on this project working with Ray Harryhausen. Here is the original trailer:

Jan Švankmajer

Jan Svankmajer is a Czech filmmaker who was born in 1934 on the 4th September. Jan Svankmajer is mainly known for his surreal animations. Which have gone onto influence artists such as Terry Gillam and the Brothers Quay. Some of his most well known work is due to the fact it has the tendency to shock people and take them by surprise. Svankmajer attended the college of Applied Arts in Prague in the department of Puppetry at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts. He was married to a well known surrealist painter Eva Svankmajerova who unfortunately passed away in 2005. Svankmajer has picked up a reputation for making his distinctive stop motion , which could be seen as scary and nightmarish and turns it into funny images for the audience. He is still making films today in Prague. His next project will be released in 2015 and is called ' Insects'
Jan Svankmajer uses ordinary lighting to make an almost realistic/unique feel . This vibe helps with the overall surreal atmosphere. Although mainly film orientated, he creates surrealist sculptures too, which include faces being merged together and men eating a table. He claims that what got him into film making was a puppet set he got for Christmas when he was a child. Svankmajer has recieved numerous awards including the Chrystal Globe in the 2009 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival
'Food' is one of Svankmajers more well known films, many people find it hard to watch because of the strange nature of it.
